Jigsaw North Fingal is a vital free and confidential service that supports young people’s mental health and well-being. Jigsaw is a resource that every community needs. We know that 75% of mental health difficulties emerge before the age of 24, so if we can get in early and provide brief supports, we can often prevent problems escalating into chronic mental health issues. At the new hub on George’s Square in Balbriggan, Jigsaw North Fingal seeks to strengthen the community’s ability to support young people aged 12-25 with their mental health. It works with young people in designing and planning a service that is youth friendly and accessible. Jigsaw also supports concerned adults by providing advice, information and signposting. It focuses on the development of family education and support programmes. Minister Reilly said: “The opening of Jigsaw North Fingal’s new hub here on George’s Square in Balbriggan is great news for North Fingal. Jigsaw’s role in providing early and brief intervention for young people with mental health vulnerabilities, along with its wider role in providing training across the community to young people, adults and professionals on mental health is crucial to making a real difference to the mental health of our young people.” I was here at the start of Jigsaw North Fingal when we opened its first hub back in October 2013. So I am especially pleased to be here to officially mark this move. North Fingal has always had a great community spirit. It’s a community who cares and takes action.” The Jigsaw Programme was designed by Headstrong and its panel of youth advisors and is an evidence based, integrated service, designed to strengthen a community’s capacity to support young people’s mental health. It works on a partnership model of coordinating and aligning all existing resources and expertise within a community. David Creed, Jigsaw North Fingal Project Manager, said: “In 2015, Jigsaw North Fingal supported the mental health of 329 young people from across the region. The launch of our new hub here on St George’s Square in Balbriggan shows the commitment of our community in supporting the mental health of our young people. It gives us a bigger and better space to continue helping more of our young people through one-to-one support sessions, and activities to promote conversation and challenge the stigma around youth mental health.” More than 13,000 young people have been supported by Headstrong’s Jigsaw programme nationally to date. The top issues which young people are presenting with include: anxiety, anger, relationship issues, depression, stress, isolating from others and withdrawal, sleep changes, low self-esteem, thoughts of hurting self and panic attacks. The top three pathways into Jigsaw nationally are self-referral; parent and GP. 43% of young people who used the service were male and 57% female, which is encouraging given the reluctance of young men in seeking help. “Adolescence can be a turbulent time and the system is weakest where it needs to be strongest”, according to Dr Tony Bates, Founding Director of Headstrong. “Jigsaw North Fingal has been a real team effort. We are now seeing many key agencies working in genuine partnership to improve services and supports for young people. If we are to achieve meaningful change we must all work together more effectively. In its absence we will continue to fail our young people. Jigsaw North Fingal is a hopeful step in the right direction. And it’s different because it involves grassroots community supports, combined with professionals and informed by the end users – young people themselves.” Young people/parents/health professionals can refer to the service by calling (01) 960 3020 or emailing northfingal@jigsaw.ie to make an appointment. – Ends – Editor’s notes Pictures will be available from the launch upon request by calling (01) 960 3020 or emailing northfingal@jigsaw.ie You can find out more about Jigsaw North Fingal at www.headstrong.ie/north-fingal/ You can find more statistics on how Jigsaw works at www.headstrong.ie/jigsawdata For further information or interview requests contact David Creed on 01 9603020, or by emailing northfingal@jigsaw.ie
