Jigsaw’s ‘Write your Mind’ on RTÉ Radio 1
May 23rd 2019
This week’s drama on RTÉ Radio 1 was ‘Write Your Mind’, a play about youth mental health.
The powerful ‘Write Your Mind’ was devised by Jigsaw Offaly and Offaly Youth Theatre, with Eugene O’Brien as writing consultant and Jigsaw’s Angela Ryan Whyte as director.
Back at the beginning of 2015 six writers, under the mentorship of playwright, Eugene O’ Brien, interpreted what it’s like to grow up as a teenager in a not so perfect world.
Jigsaw Offlay YAP member Eimear Regan performed one in the monologues in the original production, and also recorded it for broadcast on RTÉ's Drama on One.
The scripts covered a variety of themes including anxiety, bullying, self-harm, domestic violence, sexual identity and depression. They were brought to the stage at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre at the end of 2015. In January 2016 it was performed in Dunamaise Arts Centre as part of First fortnight.
Jigsaw and the YAP are delighted that these monologues have now been adapted and produced for radio in partnership with RTÉ Radio 1. Those featured on this week’s drama are:
School Tour, by Lorna Kelly Dalton, performed by Eimear Regan
Man Up, by Andrew Joseph Brown and Ali Scanlon, performed by Adam Cooper
The Help by Niall Cleary, performed by Helen Brady
Make Up Your Mind by Rory Duffy, performed by Jamie Nolan
And The Mystery of the Missing Mars Bar by Caroline Bracken, performed by Emma Cranston.
The play contains strong language and (young) adult themes.
Jigsaw Offaly’s Youth Advisory Panel were involved throughout the original play’s development. They helped come up with the initial plan looking at funding opportunities, marketing, potential partners, timing, and outcomes.
