What is jigsaw roscommon

Jigsaw Roscommon is a new project, part of a national network of Jigsaw projects supported by Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. Jigsaw Roscommon brings together community support for the mental health needs of young people aged between 12 and 22.

Jigsaw Roscommon aims to involve the whole community in better supporting young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Improving mental health awareness

While things may be improving, there is still stigma attached to mental health problems, and pressures on young people that may stop them seeking help when they need it. At Jigsaw Roscommon we are committed to helping everyone in the community – young people, their families, friends, teachers, youth workers – better understand the issues, and feel able to respond when someone they know is in distress.

School workshops, stands at local events, local advertising, all aim to open discussion on the issues and promote the need to seek help sooner rather than later. Our Youth Advisory Committee and  peer support network mean that young people themselves are central to delivering these messages.

Services that suit young people's needs

Young people need to get help in an environment that feels comfortable and safe for them. Roscommon's spread-out population and lack of public transport  mean many young people are cut off from places they can access help and advice. We're working with current youth centres and new locations to bring services out of the clinic and into the community.

Responding to young people

Most young people with problems won't need full-on medical help. We are training people to act as 'facilitators', helping young people connect with the support and services available.

We're also working to develop the skills of people already dealing with young people – teachers, sports coaches, youth workers – so that they are equipped to respond quickly and provide guidance and support to the young people they know.
