What is Jigsaw Meath?

Jigsaw Meath is a new project, part of a national network of Jigsaw projects supported by Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. Jigsaw Meath brings together community support for the mental health needs of young people aged between 12 and 25.

Direct support for young people

Any young people (12 - 25) can come to Jigsaw Meath if they have concerns that they want to talk about. We can provide information, advice, guidance and confidential support. The service is free and confidential. There is no waiting list and you do not need an appointment.

How to get support

Simply come to our hub at 1 Brews Hill in Navan any day of the week up to 6pm or on Saturday (12 - 4pm).

What happens when you come in?

We aim to be able to see you right away when you come in. We take a few details from you about what's bothering you. For some people we'll be able to offer you advice and guidance right away. For others we can offer up to 8 one-to-one sessions with a qualified therapist who will help you identify problems you might like to work on, goals you could set for yourself, and ways to achieve them. For others, we can link you with the most appropriate service for you. The first meeting you have with us does not need to take long, it's voluntary, you can leave at any time, and also, it's free. We do not charge for any of our services!

What kind of problems do we help people with?

Whatever you are facing in your life, it is probably a good idea to share it with others. People come to us with problems in relationships, with school, with family, with alcohol or drugs, with work and every other area of life. No problem is too small: it helps to talk about it. If you find you're in a low mood a lot of the time, if you get angry very easily, or if you feel things are getting on top of you, we might be able to help.

Group Activities and Social Opportunities

We also offer group activities for young people. This includes arts and crafts projects, music, anger management, self awareness and furniture restoration. On Friday evenings and Saturday, you can also come by to just hang out, or get involved in activities. Please give us a call if you're interested in one of our courses - 046 907 1702. Or keep an eye on our website and facebook.

Jigsaw Meath aims to involve the whole community in better supporting young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Working with schools and colleges

The Jigsaw approach is all about reaching out to young people where they are. Many young people spend up to a third of their day in school or college, so these are key places.

The Jigsaw Meath whole school/centre approach to promoting mental health is currently being piloted in four schools (Beaufort College in Navan, St. Oliver’s Post Primary in Oldcastle, St Peter’s College Donboyne and Athboy community College) and one Youthreach centre in Laytown.

The Jigsaw approach is all about bringing together and improving existing structures and supports, (guidance counsellors, pastoral care teams, teaching staff, sports clubs). Young people themselves are involved at all levels, and HSE Psychology and NEPS are putting in extra resources to help provide advice and support.

For more information check out the Jigsaw Meath information booklet on training available forschools/youthreach centres in County Meath.

Improving front-line support

Most young people with problems won't need full-on medical help. Jigsaw Meath is working to develop the skills of those who deal with young people – teachers, sports coaches, youth workers – so that they are equipped to respond quickly and provide guidance and support to the young people they know. More information about mental health training events.

Supporting families

A supportive and loving family is a young person's greatest resource in dealing with problems or times when they feel low. Jigsaw Meath aims to work with families to increase understanding of mental health issues and improve awareness of the other help available.

Our focus is on improving the skills and abilities of family members to better support young people. We do this by providing proven, effective training programmes for parents and families. See our events pages for information about mental health training events. We are also exploring training programmes being developed by our parent organisation, Headstrong, to help those who work with young people in the community, such as teachers and youth workers, to improve their skills and knowledge about working with families.

We also provide a point of contact for family members, with advice about sources of help and support. If you are concerned about a young person you know, contact us at meath@jigsaw.ie.

Who is involved in Jigsaw Meath?

Jigsaw Meath is not a new service, but a new way of working, linking together existing services and supports to work more effectively with young people.
